Creating skills in our borough
“We want to inspire, excite and encourage,” says Kit Lendon,
Director of Making Space in Leigh Park.
For those that have yet to come across it, Making Space is a
charitable organisation supported by Havant Borough Council, based
in the heart of Leigh Park. The organisation aims to encourage
local people to get in touch with their creative sides and get more
involved in arts and crafts.
“Using arts and crafts is a great way to help people gain
confidence, skills and self-respect,” says Kit. “Our work with
young offenders is living proof of that.”
Lorna Digweed from the Wessex Youth Offending Team agrees: “The
artists at Making Space are excellent at working with young people.
By taking them off the streets and giving them something to be
proud of we can help them to change their behaviour.”
Making Space also offers help to local businesses. Havant
resident Kate O’Connell wanted to start up a ceramics business.
“Making Space is ideal as it’s local, affordable and has everything
I need,” she says. “Surrounded by other creative people it’s a
really inspiring place.”
And she’s right, it is inspiring, with many different, exciting
projects for residents to get involved in from jewellery making to
creative weaving.
“There really is something for everyone,” says Kit. “And at the
moment we’re offering Leigh Park adults free places on Saturday
workshops as well as child care assistance for longer courses.
“Making Space is about bringing skills and business into Leigh
Park,” explains Kit. “We’re a very friendly lot and welcome anyone
to come in and find out more.”
